The same year that Napoleon fought the Battle of Waterloo, Thomas Sweeney built this structure in
Cumberland Township, Pennsylvania, operating it as a tavern and "Publick House...for travelers and
strangers," who required sojourn along the turnpike from Gettysburg to Chambersburg.
Today, the tavern has been faithfully restored and once again, travelers can enjoy a wonderful country breakfast in the restaurant, as well as afternoon tea and snacks. Then, stroll the landscaped grounds amidst two watergarden ponds. Later, enjoy a French influenced menu in the five dining areas as well as the lounge.
The Herr Tavern Restaurant is open from 11AM to 9PM, Monday through Saturday, and from 5PM to 9PM on Sunday. Reservations are recommended. The original mainhouse features five dining areas that accommodate twenty to thirty-five guests in each room.
Banquet and conference facilities are also located on the premises.
