Thomas Hisgen was an independent man, first as a businessman and then as a politician. He picked some formidable opponents. He battled Standard Oil Co. as an independent manufacturer, and he took on William Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryant as the independent Party's candidate for President of the United States in the election of 1908.
As a resident of West Springfield, Massachusetts, Thomas Hisgen purchased the now historic estate in the early 1900's, and it became the Hisgen Family Farm. Passed on to his daughter, Henrietta Hisgen by way of her marriage to U.S. Congressman Courtney Campbell of Florida, the Farm was sold in 2004 at the time of Henrietta's passing.
